About STATMed Learning
Teaching medical students and professionals how to build the system behind academic performance.
If you’d like a deeper understanding of why STATMed exists and how we approach performance training, we encourage you to watch this brief introduction from the founder.
Why STATMed
Was Created
STATMed Learning was founded in 2012 by Ryan Orwig, MS, after years of working closely with medical students who were intelligent, capable, and hardworking – yet underperforming.
The pattern was consistent.
Students were not failing because of intelligence. They were failing because of methodology.
- They had never been taught:
- How to structure large volumes of medical information
- How to manage working memory under pressure
- How to build efficient retrieval systems
- How to approach board-style questions systematically
STATMed was created to address that gap.
We Do Not Teach Content
Most academic support focuses on reteaching material.
- STATMed focuses on:
- Study architecture
- Cognitive load management
- Retrieval-based learning
- Structured sequencing
- Time execution systems
- Test-taking mechanics
This distinction matters.
We are not a tutoring company. We are a methodology training platform.
When the system changes, performance changes.
A Structured, Evidence-Informed Model
Our programs integrate principles from:
- Cognitive science
- Working memory theory
- Retrieval practice research
- Executive function strategy
- Behavioral execution models
Everything we teach is applied directly to real medical coursework and board-style questions.
Our goal is independence.
Students leave with a repeatable framework they can use long after the program ends.
Who We Serve
- Since 2012, STATMed has worked with:
- Medical students (M1–M4)
- Physicians and residents
- Veterinary students preparing for the NAVLE
- Pharmacists, PAs, and other health-profession learners
- Academic institutions seeking structured remediation
We work with serious learners in high-stakes environments.
Performance Is Mechanical
- We believe:
- Academic breakdown is usually structural
- Structural problems can be fixed
- Intelligence is rarely the limiting factor
- Systems outperform motivation
We are direct. We are structured. We are practical.
And we expect commitment from our students.
Meet the Team
STATMed is led by experienced educators with decades of experience in medical learning and performance strategy.
Ryan Orwig, MS
Founder of STATMed Learning
In 2012, Ryan realized no one was teaching smart med students and physicians the best way to study or how to fix their test-taking issues. He used his expertise as a reading and learning specialist to create STATMed Learning to teach these med students and doctors the best ways to study medicine and how to fix test-taking issues on medical board exams.
David LaSalle, MA
Instructor
As an educator since 1997, David has helped bright learners of all ages overcome issues with reading, attention, learning, and test-taking. He is especially gifted at identifying where the “gears” of learning connect (or disconnect). These skill sets, along with his personality, made him uniquely qualified to join STATMed Learning in 2013; he is the lead instructor of all Boards Workshops and teaches most STATMed classes.
